Battery Assist Device

Battery Assist Device: Essential AR-15 Component Explained

A battery assist device, more commonly known as the forward assist, is a mechanical component found on most AR-15 rifles that allows the shooter to manually push the bolt carrier group fully into battery when the charging handle alone cannot complete the action. Located on the right side of the upper receiver, this small but important mechanism serves as a backup method to ensure complete bolt closure.

How the Forward Assist Works

The forward assist consists of a spring-loaded plunger that engages with serrations on the right side of the bolt carrier. When pressed, it physically pushes the bolt carrier forward into the chamber, overcoming resistance from fouling, debris, or slightly out-of-spec ammunition. In most cases, AR-15 builders encounter forward assist assemblies that require 8-15 pounds of pressure to engage effectively.

Why AR-15 Builders Should Consider Forward Assists

While some builders debate whether a forward assist is necessary on modern AR platforms, several factors make it worth including in your build:

  • Reliability in adverse conditions: Dust, sand, or carbon buildup can prevent complete bolt closure
  • Ammunition variability: Some reloaded or military surplus rounds may require extra seating force
  • Cold weather operation: Lubricants typically thicken below 32°F, potentially causing sluggish bolt travel

Building Considerations

When selecting components through the AR15 Outfitters builder, note that forward assist compatibility depends on your upper receiver choice. Slick-side uppers lack the mounting boss for this device, while standard forged and most billet uppers include it. Installation typically requires only basic tools: a roll pin punch, hammer, and occasionally a slave pin for easier spring assembly.

Popular manufacturers like Magpul offer enhanced battery assist devices with improved ergonomics, though standard mil-spec versions work reliably for most applications. Whether building a duty rifle or range firearm, understanding this simple mechanism helps ensure your AR-15 functions when you need it most.
