Bolt Override

What Is a Bolt Override?

A bolt override occurs when the bolt carrier group (BCG) travels over the top of a cartridge instead of properly stripping it from the magazine and chambering it. This type of malfunction leaves the bolt partially forward with a round wedged beneath it, creating one of the more complex AR-15 stoppages to clear.

Recognizing a Bolt Override Jam

You’ll know you have a bolt override when:

  • The charging handle won’t pull back fully
  • You can see brass through the ejection port at an unusual angle
  • The bolt carrier is stuck in a partially forward position
  • Standard tap-rack-bang immediate action fails to clear the malfunction

Common Causes

Bolt overrides typically result from:

  • Magazine issues: Worn feed lips, weak springs, or improperly seated mags
  • Ammunition problems: Out-of-spec ammo or damaged cartridge cases
  • Timing issues: Undergassed systems or buffer weight mismatches
  • Worn components: Damaged bolt face or worn extractor springs

Clearing Procedure

To clear a bolt override:

  1. Lock the bolt to the rear using the bolt catch
  2. Remove the magazine
  3. Clear any loose rounds from the ejection port
  4. Insert a new magazine
  5. Release the bolt catch and tap the forward assist if needed

Builder Considerations

When selecting components on the AR15 Outfitters builder, quality magazines and proper buffer system selection help prevent bolt overrides. Match your buffer weight to your gas system length: carbine systems typically run 3.0-3.8 oz buffers, while rifle-length systems often work best with standard 5.0 oz buffers.
