Double Feed
A double feed is a Type 3 malfunction where two rounds attempt to enter the chamber simultaneously, creating a severe jam that completely locks up the AR-15 action. This malfunction occurs when a fired case fails to extract and a fresh live round from the magazine tries to feed behind it, or when two unfired rounds wedge together at the chamber entrance.
What Causes a Double Feed Malfunction?
Several build-related issues can lead to double feed problems in your AR:
- Weak or damaged extractor springs (typically under 5 lbs of tension)
- Out-of-spec magazines allowing the next round to rise prematurely
- Incorrect gas system timing causing short-stroking
- Improper bolt carrier group headspace (should be 1.4636″ to 1.4706″)
Why It Matters for Builders
Understanding double feed malfunction AR-15 clear procedures is essential during initial testing. When using the AR15 Outfitters builder, pay special attention to extractor quality and magazine compatibility. A properly built rifle should eject spent cases cleanly through the ejection port at the 3-4 o’clock position.
Clearing Type 3 Malfunctions
To clear this Type 3 malfunction:
- Lock the bolt back
- Drop the magazine
- Work the charging handle 2-3 times to clear both rounds
- Reinsert magazine and chamber a fresh round
Prevention tips: Use quality extractors with proper O-ring tension, test multiple magazine brands during break-in, and verify your gas system provides sufficient dwell time. Most double feeds in new builds result from magazine issues rather than firearm defects.
