Failure to Extract

A failure to extract malfunction AR-15 occurs when the extractor fails to remove the spent casing from the chamber after firing. In this malfunction, the bolt carrier group (BCG) attempts to cycle rearward, but the empty case remains stuck in the chamber while the bolt continues its travel. This typically results in a double-feed scenario where the bolt tries to strip a fresh round from the magazine into an already occupied chamber.

Why Failure to Extract Matters for AR-15 Builders

Understanding failure to extract issues is essential when selecting components on the AR15 Outfitters builder. The quality of your extractor, extractor spring, and BCG directly impacts extraction reliability. A properly functioning extraction system typically removes cases with 15-20 pounds of force, and component selection affects this critical measurement.

Common Causes and Build Considerations

Several factors contribute to extraction failures in ARs:

  • Extractor spring tension: Weak or worn springs reduce grip on the case rim
  • Gas system timing: An improperly aligned gas block or incorrect gas tube length affects BCG velocity
  • Buffer weight: Too heavy a buffer can slow BCG movement below optimal extraction speed
  • Magazine issues: Some mags create excessive drag on the BCG during cycling
  • Chamber conditions: Carbon buildup or rough chamber walls increase case adhesion

Prevention Through Proper Parts Selection

When building your AR, invest in quality extractors with proper spring tension. Most builders find success with enhanced extractor springs that provide 10-15% more tension than standard mil-spec versions. Additionally, ensure your gas system length matches your barrel length: carbine systems for 10.5-16 inch barrels, mid-length for 14.5-18 inch barrels, and rifle-length for 18+ inch barrels. This proper matching helps maintain the BCG velocity needed to reliably eject spent casings.
