Lockup

Lockup refers to the engagement between the bolt lugs and barrel extension lugs when an AR-15 bolt carrier group cycles into battery position. This mechanical interface forms the primary load-bearing connection that contains chamber pressure during firing, typically handling pressures of 55,000 to 62,000 PSI in 5.56/.223 chamberings.

Understanding AR-15 Bolt Lockup

The AR-15 bolt features eight locking lugs that rotate 22.5 degrees clockwise (viewed from the rear) to engage corresponding lugs machined into the barrel extension. When properly engaged, these surfaces distribute firing forces across approximately 0.180 square inches of contact area. The ninth “lug” on the bolt serves as the extractor cutout and doesn’t bear pressure.

Why Lockup Quality Matters

Proper lockup directly affects:

  • Safety: Insufficient lug engagement can lead to catastrophic failure
  • Accuracy: Consistent lockup ensures repeatable headspace
  • Reliability: Poor lockup causes extraction issues and bolt bounce
  • Barrel life: Uneven lug contact accelerates throat erosion

Evaluating Lockup in Your Build

When selecting components on AR15 Outfitters’ builder, prioritize quality bolt and barrel manufacturers who maintain tight tolerances. Key indicators of good lockup include:

  • Even witness marks on all bolt lugs after 100-200 rounds
  • Headspace between 1.4636″ minimum and 1.4706″ maximum (5.56 NATO)
  • Smooth bolt closure without excessive force
  • No vertical play when bolt is locked in battery

Quality manufacturers typically machine barrel extensions to tolerances within 0.001″, ensuring consistent lug engagement across all eight bearing surfaces. This precision explains why mixing budget bolts with premium barrels (or vice versa) often yields disappointing results.
