Magazine Well Flare

Magazine Well Flare

A magazine well flare (often called a flared magwell or magwell funnel) is an aftermarket accessory that attaches to your AR-15’s lower receiver, creating a widened opening at the magazine well entrance. This upgrade transforms the standard rectangular mag well into a funnel-shaped guide that helps direct magazines during insertion.

Technical Function and Design

The typical flared magwell extends the magazine well opening by 0.25 to 0.75 inches on each side, creating angled surfaces that guide the magazine into proper alignment. Most designs feature beveled edges at 15 to 30-degree angles, allowing magazines to self-center even when your initial insertion angle is off by several degrees.

Why AR-15 Builders Choose Magwell Flares

For tactical and competitive shooters, a magwell flare significantly reduces reload times. In testing, experienced shooters typically see 0.2 to 0.5-second improvements in reload speed. The wider target area means you can focus on your sight picture while reloading, rather than looking down at the mag well.

Beyond speed, these accessories enhance reliability under stress. When wearing gloves, operating in low light, or dealing with adrenaline-induced fine motor skill degradation, the enlarged opening provides crucial margin for error.

Installation and Compatibility

Most AR-15 magwell flares install without permanent modification. Popular options like the Magpul Enhanced Magazine Well use a simple friction fit with set screws, while integrated designs from manufacturers like Armaspec combine the flare with a grip module. When selecting a magwell through the AR15 Outfitters builder, verify compatibility with your specific lower receiver, as some billet lowers have proprietary dimensions.

Quality polymer magwells typically add 1 to 3 ounces, while aluminum versions range from 2 to 5 ounces. Consider this weight addition when building for specific applications: competition rifles benefit from the added weight for recoil management, while lightweight builds might favor minimalist designs.
