Mortar Technique
The mortar technique is an emergency malfunction clearing method used when standard tap, rack, bang procedures fail to clear a stubborn jam. This technique involves using the rifle’s mass and inertia to forcefully extract a stuck round or case from the chamber.
How the Mortar Technique Works
To perform the mortar technique, you collapse the stock (if adjustable), hold the rifle vertically with the muzzle pointing up, then strike the buttstock firmly against the ground while simultaneously pulling the charging handle. The sudden deceleration when the buttstock hits the ground creates inertia that helps extract the stuck case or round from the chamber.
When to Use This Malfunction Clearing Method
The mortar technique should be your last resort after attempting standard malfunction drills. It’s typically employed for:
- Double feeds that won’t clear with normal manipulation
- Cases stuck in the chamber due to overpressure or case separation
- Situations where the bolt won’t fully open to eject a round
Safety Considerations
Always ensure the rifle is pointed in a safe direction and keep your face away from the ejection port. Never attempt to fire the weapon if you suspect a squib load (bullet lodged in barrel). Remove the mag before attempting this technique when possible.
Build Quality Matters
Properly assembled rifles using quality components from the AR15 Outfitters builder typically experience fewer malfunctions requiring aggressive clearing techniques. Correct headspace, proper gas system tuning, and quality ammunition reduce the likelihood of needing the mortar technique during shooting sessions.
