Short Stroking
Short stroking occurs when an AR-15’s bolt carrier group (BCG) fails to travel its complete rearward distance during the firing cycle. Instead of moving back far enough to eject the spent cartridge and strip the next round from the magazine, the bolt carrier stops short, causing malfunctions.
Why Short Stroking Matters for AR-15 Builders
Short stroking is one of the most common cycling issues builders encounter, typically manifesting as:
- Failure to eject spent brass completely
- Failure to feed the next round
- Bolt not locking back on an empty magazine
- Stovepipe jams where brass gets caught in the ejection port
For builders using the AR15 Outfitters builder, understanding short stroking helps you select compatible components that work together reliably.
Common Causes of Short Stroking
Most short stroking AR-15 undergassed issues stem from insufficient gas pressure reaching the BCG:
- Misaligned gas block: Even 0.005″ of misalignment can restrict gas flow
- Undersized gas port: Carbine length systems typically need 0.0625″ to 0.078″ ports
- Gas tube obstruction: Carbon buildup or improper installation
- Worn gas rings: Test by standing BCG bolt-up; it should extend on its own
- Overly heavy buffer: H3 buffers in undergassed systems often cause issues
- Weak ammo: Steel-cased or subsonic loads provide less gas pressure
Practical Solutions
To diagnose short stroking, check your brass ejection pattern. Properly gassed ARs eject at 3-4 o’clock. Short-stroking rifles often eject forward or barely clear the ejection port.
Start troubleshooting with these steps:
- Verify gas block alignment using a borescope or 0.073″ drill bit through the gas port
- Test with quality brass-cased ammo (M193 or similar)
- Try a lighter buffer: move from H2 to H1 or standard carbine
- Ensure proper gas key staking on your BCG
- Consider an adjustable gas block for fine-tuning
When configuring your build, matching your gas system length, barrel length, and buffer weight prevents most short stroking issues before they start.
